In The Beginning…
She was born Dorothy Hackett McGuire on June 14, 1916 in Omaha, Nebraska. McGuire was the only child of Isabelle Flaherty McGuire and Thomas Johnson McGuire.
She made her stage debut at age 13 at the local community playhouse in Barrie’s A Kiss for Cinderella.
Amazingly, her co-star of that stage play was fellow Nebraskan Henry Fonda.
Fonda was making a return visit to his home town after becoming a success on Broadway.
They happened to be in this production together and both went on to be big stars.
Career Highlights
She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for Gentleman’s Agreement (1947).
Won the National Board of Review Award for Best Actress for Friendly Persuasion (1956).
She starred as the mother in the popular films Old Yeller (1957) and Swiss Family Robinson (1960).

McGuire was married just one time!
Dorothy McGuire married John Swope, a photographer for Life magazine, in 1943.
The marriage lasted for close to 40 years until his death in 1979.
McGuire had 2 Children
During her marriage to John Swope, Dorothy McGuire had two children:
- Topo Swope (daughter), born in 1949.
- Mark Swope (son), born in 1953.
