8 Not So Trivial Tidbits About The (Vintage) Entertainment Industry

That’s why I’m sharing these 8 tidbits about the vintage entertainment industry.

The following tidbits come directly from a book I received for Christmas 2023.

It’s called “Interesting Facts For Curious Minds” by Jordan Moore.

Did you know…

The 2 highest grossing movies of the 1950s were The Ten Commandments and Ben Hur. Both starred the legendary Charlton Heston.

2. The United States has Hollywood, but the UK has Pinewood. Pinewood Studios opened in 1936. It has been home to some of the biggest blockbuster movies to come out of Europe. This includes the James Bond franchise.

3. 270% of silent films have been permanently lost forever because they were made with nitrate. Nitrate is a highly flammable and corrosive substance.

4. To date, the highest grossing movie of all time is Avatar. As of 2022, Avatar has raked in $2,847,246,203. That’s nearly $3 BILLION dollars!

5. In the 1950s, America was introduced to a new innovation. The television set. A new TV would cost anywhere from $129 to $1295. If it was a color TV it was easily $1000 or more.

6. The highest grossing silent film of all time is D.W. Griffith’s Birth of a Nation (1915). It starred Lillian Gish. It was rumored she and Griffith had a long time affair. Find the full movie on youtube here…

Actor Ken Osmond played Eddie Haskell in the 1950s TV show “Leave It To Beaver”. After the show ended Osmond went on to become a police officer in Los Angeles. He stayed with the force for 18 years.

The TV show Gunsmoke produced more episodes than any other in history with 635 episodes. A close second is Law and Order: Special Victims Unit (which is still running) with 512 episodes.
