“Way To The Neighbor” consists of a single shot taken of a lovely young woman’s face. Her expression and movement are clear: The woman is having sex with a man.
The actors are Renate Meves and Gerd Hübinger.
This film was published in 1968 by Mommartzfilm
It’s a ten-minute opus that Director Lutz Mommartz commented as follows:
“A woman communicates with the audience.”
If you want and are expecting more… it does not happen. The devoted rapture in the face of the actor lets the viewer imagine that this is not a compulsory exercise, but a pleasurable freestyle happening.
Lutz Mommartz is the purist among German filmmakers. His scenes focus on the basic elements of movement and rest, of tension and relaxation.
It’s as if Mommartz wants to force his audience into the rhythm of his cinematic action with the suggestive power of repeated banality.
It’s well worth the watch.
This is a very highly suggestive film without ever giving the audience a look at the naughty bits. Many a porn director today could take some notes from Mommartz.
Director Lutz Mommartz was born 6 March 1934 in Erkelenz, Germany — died 26 July 202
He was also an artist and professor. From 1952 to 1975, he worked in Düsseldorf’s municipal administration (city government) while cultivating his film/arts pursuits.
Around 1967 he switched into film (shooting on 16 mm) and gained recognition for experimental short films.
Mommartz’s works often explore the theory of cinema, the relationship between audience and film, and push formal boundaries. For example, manipulating time perception, using split screens, camera movements, etc.
- One of his early breakthrough films was Selbstschüsse (“Self‑Shots”), which won a prize at an experimental film festival in Knokke, Belgium in 1967.
In October 1975, he founded a film class at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and began teaching film. Then Mommartz went to become a professor there until 1999.
Although Mommartz died on 26 July 2025 at age 91 he is remembered as a pioneer of “the other cinema” and moving beyond mainstream film, as well as, expanding film’s expressive potential.
