Gil Elvgren is one of the most influential artists and illustrators of the 20th century… and frankly, one of my favorite pinup artists.
He was born Gillette Alexander Elvgren on March 15, 1914 and passed on February 29, 1980.
Elvgren was an American painter and illustrator of pin-up models and for advertising.
Elvgren studied at the American Academy of Art.
He was strongly influenced by the early “pretty girl” illustrators, such as Charles Dana Gibson (creator of the ‘Gibson Girls’ illustrations), Andrew Loomis and Howard Chandler Christy.
Other influences included the Brandywine School founded by Howard Pyle.
