Summary
Romance (1930), starring Greta Garbo, is a romantic drama about a celebrated opera singer whose love life becomes entangled with questions of passion, loyalty, and sacrifice. Garbo plays Rita Cavallini, a glamorous and independent operatic singer who must choose between her devotion to her art and her feelings for a young man. Gavin Gordon plays Tom Armstrong, the young priest/rector who falls in love with her. Lewis Stone plays Cornelius “Corny” Van Tuyl, the wealthy older man who is Rita’s patron/lover. This is a surprisingly complex story that takes Garbo’s character through numerous ups and downs. It is part commentary as much as it is love story.
