The V&V Chronicles is a monthly newsletter produced by The Body House. Dyann Bridges is the website owner, writer, publisher and confidante for men at The Body House.
The V&V celebrates vintage vamps, varlets and sensuality.
These days, we’ve lost so much of what makes men; men and so much of the totality of what women can be.
The mission of The Body House is to highlight the differences between the sexes and to encourage those differences to be lived out.
The stars of decades gone by were not just beautiful and talented. They also embraced their femininity and grace.
I believe classic old Hollywood stars embodied the full spirit of what it meant to be a man or a woman.
Of course, this publication, as with all the content released through The Body House, focuses on female sensuality for a heterosexual male audience.
Beauty with humility.
Intelligence lead intuition.
Softness without weakness.
Strength without the edge.
Glamor with approachability.
Sensuality with subtly.
These features are written and researched with the intent to preserve the bulk of publicly known information about these exceptional women.
I hope you find the pictures and short bios interesting and ultimately inspiring.
In this September issue of The V&V we have the lovely and sophisticated GREER GARSON.
As with all the ladies featured, Garson is a vision of strength, intelligence, independence and sensuality.
Thank you for supporting The V&V Chronicles and The Body House.
Have a sensual day, Dyann Bridges Writer and Editor-in-Chief

GREER’S EARLY LIFE & PASSING
Greer Garson was born Eileen Evelyn Greer Garson on the 29th of September 1904 in Manor Park, East Ham Essex, England and passed away on the 6th of April 1996 in Dallas,Texas at the age of 91.
Garson’s resting place is located at Sparkman-Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery.
Many notable people have been laid to rest here including billionaire and presidential candidate, Ross Perot, baseball great Mickey Mantle and Mary Kay Ash, founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics.
Garson was a British-American actress and singer.
She was a major star at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer during the 1930s and 40s.
Greer became most popular during the Second World War for her portrayal of strong women on the home front.
She’s listed by the Motion Picture Herald as one of America’s top-ten box office draws from 1942 to 1946.
RISE TO STARDOM
Her talent went well beyond her movie star status becoming the fourth most-nominated woman for the Best Actress Oscar.
Garson received seven Academy Award nominations, including a record-tying nod with Bette Davis.
Greer had five consecutive Best Actress nominations (1941–1945), winning for her performance in the title role of the 1942 film, Mrs. Miniver.
Greer Garson was also know to be big-hearted and gave back in numerous ways.
She was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) by The British Empire.
This award honors British citizens for acts of outstanding chivalry, charity, public service and for their contributions to the arts and sciences outside of civil service.
An Aspiring Actress & Student
While aspiring to be an actress, Garson attended King’s College London where she read French and 18th century literature and attended postgraduate studies at the University of Grenoble.
Being young, poised and intelligent garnered Greer an appointment as head of the research library of LINTAS in the marketing department of Lever Brothers, one of the largest manufacturers of soaps and detergents in the United States.
Her co-worker there, fellow actor George Sanders, wrote in his autobiography that it was Garson who suggested he take up a career in acting.
Garson’s early professional appearances were on stage, starting at Birmingham Repertory Theatre in January 1932, when she was 27 years old.
This was considered a late start for an actress. Especially one who would go on to become as well known as Greer.
In 1936, she appeared in two large, well received play in the West End of London. One was Charles Bennett’s play Page From a Diary, and Noël Coward’s play Mademoiselle.
Garson Was A Very Early Player On TV
Greer appeared on television during its earliest years (the late 1930s!).
Most notably starring in a 30-minute production of an excerpt of Twelfth Night in May 1937, with Dorothy Black.
These live transmissions were part of the BBC’s experimental service from Alexandra Palace, and this is the first known instance of a Shakespeare play performed on television.
Then The Movies Came Calling
Louis B. Mayer discovered Garson while he was in London looking for new talent. Garson was signed to a contract with MGM in late 1937. Greer was 33 years old. Considered an unusually advanced age to first receive a major Hollywood studio contract.
The actress suffered a back injury during her first 18 months at MGM while waiting for a role Mayer deemed worthy of her, and was nearly released from her contract.
She began work on her first film, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, in late 1938. Garson received her first Oscar nomination for the role, but lost to Vivien Leigh for Gone with the Wind.
She received critical acclaim the next year for her role as Elizabeth Bennet in the 1940 film Pride and Prejudice.

GREER GARSON’S TOP MOVIES
MRS. MINIVER
This film is one of Greer Garson’s best known and for good reason. It’s a war drama which is still significant today.
It focuses on a family living a peaceful English life who are suddenly thrown into turmoil by World War II.
Mr. and Mrs. MINIVER provide a solid sense of security for their children as the action hits far too close to home… literally.
Greer and Mr. Miniver, played by Walter Pidgeon, have fantastic chemistry which extended beyond the camera. They would appear together in 8 more films!
Mrs. Miniver was released 7 months after America’s entry into World War II.
As this was a time before TV was widely available, the film did a great deal to inform the American people about Britain’s defiance against Nazi Germany.
This came at a time of heightened emotions for millions of people around the world.
Mrs. Miniver was not only expertly acted but expertly produced and directed as well.
The movie won 6 Oscars, including Best Picture & Best Director.
**Trivia** – Richard Ney who plays Greer Garson’s son in the movie became her HUSBAND after they finished shooting!

GOODBYE MR. CHIPS
Director Sam Woods (‘For Whom the Bell Tolls’) gives us `Goodbye Mr. Chips’ a 1939 film.
The leading man, Robert Donat as Mr. Chips, ages 63 years during the movie.
Donat plays an elderly and somewhat stuffy, classics teacher who looks back over his long career; remembering pupils and colleagues.
Above all, Mr. Chippings recalls the idyllic courtship and marriage that transformed his life.
Garson’s character, Katherine, is able to show the stodgy Chips how to live life.
Her effect on him lasts throughout the rest of his life, although Garson is not around for long.

PRIDE & PREDJUDICE
Pride and Prejudice, an 1813 novel by the author Jane Austen, has been made numerous times.
The story follows Elizabeth Bennet, the dynamic leading lady, who learns about the consequences of snap judgments.
As well as, learning to appreciate the difference between superficial goodness and actual goodness.
Then we watch as the arrival of several wealthy bachelors in town causes an uproar.
The families with single daughters aggressively seek out engagements, including the Bennet family as they have five lovely and eligible daughters.
Greer Garson and Sir Laurence Olivier do a fantastic job.
It’s hard not to be in awe of Olivier’s style as the suitor who is both superior and vulnerable.
Garson’s portrayal of a woman torn between his betrayal of her sister and her feelings for him are subtle, yet palpable.

QUOTES BY GREER GARSON
THE LOVES OF GREER GARSON
Garson was married three times.

Her first marriage, on was to Edward Alec Abbot Snelson (1904–1992),
Later her became Sir Edward,.
He was a British civil servant who became a noted judge and expert in Indian affairs.
After Sir Edward and Greer spent a honeymoon in Germany, he returned to his appointment at Nagpur, India.

Snelson reportedly missed Greer intently. He would watch multiple viewings of any one of her films when they played in theaters in Nagpur.
The marriage did not last as they spent much time apart. However, the union was not formally dissolved until 1943.
Richard Ney – Married July, 24th 1943 – Divorced 1947
Her second marriage, was to Richard Ney (1916–2004).
Ney was a young actor who had played her son in Mrs. Miniver. He was also 12 years her junior.
The relationship was under constant scrutiny by fans and the big studios. MGM tried to portray them as a happy couple, but the marriage was troubled. They divorced in 1947.
Ney gave up acting for good in 1961. He went on to become a prominent stock market analyst and financial consultant.
Ney gained nationwide fame in 1962 for accurately predicting the stock market crash of that year.
Richard also wrote several best-selling books on the subject of Wall Street, and was a frequent talk-show guest and financial-advice show host.
Below is a reprint of a letter that Ney wrote to a friend that includes information about how he felt about his wife Greer. It seems she just didn’t adore him enough.
The style of writing for the time is elegant and a clear indication that in many ways human society has not evolved in a consistently upward fashion.

Third Marriage to “Buddy” Fogelson in 1949 Until His Death in 1987
Greer finally found her life long love with millionaire, Texas oilman and horse breeder, E.E. “Buddy” Fogelson. He was born in 1900 and they stayed married until his death in 1987.
Elijah E. “Buddy” Fogelson was an American lawyer, Army colonel, oilman, businessman, horse and cattle breeder, and philanthropist.

In 1967, Greer and Buddy retired to their Forked Lightning Ranch in New Mexico.
They purchased the US Hall of Fame champion Thoroughbred horse named ‘Ack Ack’.
They had purchased the horse from the estate of Harry F. Guggenheim in 1971 who were successful as Thoroughbred breeders.

Greer Garson also founded a permanent endowment for the Fogelson Honors Forum at Texas Christian University (TCU),
Buddy Fogelson is buried next to his wife Greer Garson at Sparkman Hillcrest Memorial Park.
