GREER’S EARLY LIFE & PASSING

RISE TO STARDOM
Her talent went well beyond her movie star status becoming the fourth most-nominated woman for the Best Actress Oscar. Garson received seven Academy Award nominations, including a record-tying nod with Bette Davis. Greer had five consecutive Best Actress nominations (1941–1945), winning for her performance in the title role of the 1942 film, Mrs. Miniver. Greer Garson was also know to be big-hearted and gave back in numerous ways. She was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) by The British Empire. This award honors British citizens for acts of outstanding chivalry, charity, public service and for their contributions to the arts and sciences outside of civil service. An Aspiring Actress & Student
While aspiring to be an actress, Garson attended King’s College London where she read French and 18th century literature and attended postgraduate studies at the University of Grenoble. Being young, poised and intelligent garnered Greer an appointment as head of the research library of LINTAS in the marketing department of Lever Brothers, one of the largest manufacturers of soaps and detergents in the United States. Her co-worker there, fellow actor George Sanders, wrote in his autobiography that it was Garson who suggested he take up a career in acting. Garson’s early professional appearances were on stage, starting at Birmingham Repertory Theatre in January 1932, when she was 27 years old. This was considered a late start for an actress. Especially one who would go on to become as well known as Greer. In 1936, she appeared in two large, well received play in the West End of London. One was Charles Bennett’s play Page From a Diary, and Noël Coward’s play Mademoiselle.Garson Was A Very Early Player On TV
Greer appeared on television during its earliest years (the late 1930s!). Most notably starring in a 30-minute production of an excerpt of Twelfth Night in May 1937, with Dorothy Black. These live transmissions were part of the BBC’s experimental service from Alexandra Palace, and this is the first known instance of a Shakespeare play performed on television. Then The Movies Came Calling
Louis B. Mayer discovered Garson while he was in London looking for new talent. Garson was signed to a contract with MGM in late 1937. Greer was 33 years old. Considered an unusually advanced age to first receive a major Hollywood studio contract. The actress suffered a back injury during her first 18 months at MGM while waiting for a role Mayer deemed worthy of her, and was nearly released from her contract. She began work on her first film, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, in late 1938. Garson received her first Oscar nomination for the role, but lost to Vivien Leigh for Gone with the Wind. She received critical acclaim the next year for her role as Elizabeth Bennet in the 1940 film Pride and Prejudice.

MRS. MINIVER
This film is one of Greer Garson’s best known and for good reason. It’s a war drama which is still significant today.
It focuses on a family living a peaceful English life who are suddenly thrown into turmoil by World War II.
Mr. and Mrs. MINIVER provide a solid sense of security for their children as the action hits far too close to home… literally.
Greer and Mr. Miniver, played by Walter Pidgeon, have fantastic chemistry which extended beyond the camera. They would appear together in 8 more films!
Mrs. Miniver was released 7 months after America’s entry into World War II.As this was a time before TV was widely available, the film did a great deal to inform the American people about Britain’s defiance against Nazi Germany.
This came at a time of heightened emotions for millions of people around the world.
Mrs. Miniver was not only expertly acted but expertly produced and directed as well.
The movie won 6 Oscars, including Best Picture & Best Director.
**Trivia** – Richard Ney who plays Greer Garson’s son in the movie became her HUSBAND after they finished shooting!
