Quotes From George C. Scott AND The Women He Loved...

In today’s Sundays are Made for Vintage Sensuality post, we take a closer look at George C. Scott.

George C. Scott was known to be a great actor, highly volatile and a man’s man.

What you may not know is that he was wed to the sensual and earthy Colleen Dewhurst twice.

During his first marriage to Dewhurst, Scott began working on a movie with Ava Gardner.

Soon after meeting, George C. Scott and Gardner began a rip roaring affair.

It was scandalous and by all accounts vicious.

According to what is written in Rage and Glory – Scott broke Gardner’s bones on multiple occasions.

Scott and Gardner met on the set of The Bible In The Beginning (1966).

It was August of 1964. Scott had arrived with his wife (for the 1st time) Colleen Dewhurst and their two sons.

However, it didn’t take long before the two actors were spending their days, as well as, their night together.

Scott had fallen hard for Gardner.

According to Fred Sidewater, who was Dino De Laurentiis’s assistant on the film:

“Scott was crazy about her from the beginning. And I mean crazy. He was hopelessly in love with her, and she was not in love with him.”

Scott had visions of marrying Gardner and became insanely jealous at the least mention of any of her previous lovers or husbands-particularly Sinatra.

In another excerpt from Rage and Glory the author goes on to say that Gardner told her friend, journalist Stephen Birmingham:

“I’ve fallen for him.” – Ava Gardner

‘At the time of the declaration, her (Gardner) arm was in a sling, a hunk of her hair had been torn out, her collarbone was broken, and she had double vision in both eyes. Birmingham observed that Gardner came from a “kind of redneck” background in North Carolina where physical abuse among lovers was common. She may have thought that was how men naturally related to women.’

Wow.

Situations like this are not uncommon or unique to Hollywood. However, unlike everywhere else, the people involved are mega movie stars.
