Greetings Celebrators of Vintage Glamour & Sensuality;
WELCOME TO THE AUDREY HEPBURN ISSUE!
To this day, Audrey Hepburn remains one of Hollywood’s most beloved stars and a symbol of grace and feminine beauty across the world.
Born in Belgium in 1929, she spent part of her childhood in the Netherlands during World War II. It was an incredibly difficult time for her and her family when the Nazi occupation took over that area. That experience shaped her and later influenced her humanitarian work.
After training as a dancer, Hepburn moved into acting and became an international star with her breakthrough role as Princess Ann in Roman Holiday. Her performance earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress.
She went on to captivate audiences in films such as Sabrina, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and My Fair Lady, creating some of the most memorable characters in cinema history.
Beyond her acting career, Hepburn became known for her timeless fashion sense, particularly her collaborations with designer Hubert de Givenchy, whose elegant designs helped define her public image.
Hepburn was married twice and had a son with each husband. She also had a string of very intense relationships with men she met in the industry.
She considered her humanitarian work one of her greatest achievements. In her later years, she served as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF, traveling around the world to advocate for children facing poverty, hunger, and hardship.
Audrey Hepburn’s legacy is the combination of an extraordinary film career and a life devoted to kindness. More than a Hollywood icon, she became a symbol of grace, resilience, and the belief that fame could be used to make a positive difference in the world.
This issue of the Old Hollywood Newsletter highlights Audrey Hepburn’s 3 top movies and her significant relationships and marriages.

In The Beginning
Audrey Hepburn — Early Life & Breakthrough
Audrey Hepburn was born Audrey Kathleen Ruston on May 4, 1929, in Brussels, Belgium.
She spent much of her childhood in Belgium, England, and the Netherlands, where she was raised in a privileged, but increasingly unstable family environment.
During World War II, Hepburn and her mother lived in the German-occupied Netherlands. The hardships of the war had a profound effect on her childhood.
She studied ballet and dreamed of becoming a dancer, but malnutrition during the war years affected her health which made a career as a professional ballerina unlikely.
After the war, Hepburn moved to Amsterdam and later London, where she continued studying ballet while beginning to work as a model and performer.
Small stage and film roles gradually led her toward acting.
Her breakthrough came in the early 1950s, eventually launching the international film career that made her one of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars.

BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S (1961)
Audrey Hepburn played Holly Golightly in this screen adaptation of Truman Capote’s novel of the same name.
This is probably the film most associated with Audrey Hepburn’s image.
Her portrayal of the charming, mysterious, and very independent Holly Golightly became an iconic pop-culture moment. Especially the opening scene outside Tiffany & Co. in New York — it became iconic.
The film also cemented her status as a fashion icon, with the little black dress, oversized sunglasses, and updo becoming instantly recognizable.

AUDREY HEPBURN’S ROMANCES
Audrey Hepburn was married twice in her life. She had two sons. One with each husband.
1st Marriage: Mel Ferrer (1954–1968)
Audrey Hepburn and Mel Ferrer met at a party hosted by Gregory Peck in 1954. Peck became a good friend after working together in Roman Holiday.
He’d invited both actors, as well as many other industry people to a party and Hepburn and Ferrer hit it off.
Ferrer was already a respected figure in theater and film and older than Hepburn was by about 12 years. Their relationship progressed quickly though and they married in 1954.
Ferrer became an important figure in Hepburn’s early Hollywood career, directing her in Green Mansions and appearing with her on screen in War and Peace.
They had one son together, Sean Hepburn Ferrer born in 1960. Hepburn considered motherhood one of the most important roles of her life.
Ultimately, their relationship lasted 14 years and ended in divorce.
Hepburn later described the marriage as ‘an important but difficult chapter of her life.’

2nd Marriage: Andrea Dotti (1969–1982)
Audrey Hepburn met Andrea Dotti, an Italian psychiatrist, while traveling in Europe.
They married in 1969 and lived primarily in Italy. They had one son together, Luca Dotti who was born 1970. Hepburn enjoyed raising her children mostly away from Hollywood.
Their relationship eventually ended after years of personal difficulties and separation.

AUDREY HEPBURN’S MAJOR ROMANCES
Robert Wolders (1980–1993)
Actor, Robert Wolders was Audrey Hepburn’s partner from1980 until her death in 1993.
They were introduced by a mutual friend in 1980 as Hepburn’s second marriage to Andrea Dotti was ending and Wolders was grieving the loss of his late wife, actress Merle Oberon.
When they began their relationship in 1980, Hepburn was 51 years old and Wolders was 43.
Although they never married, he was considered the great love of her life. They shared a quieter life focused on family, travel, and their humanitarian work.

OTHER IMPORTANT ROMANCES
James Hanson
James Hanson (later Lord Hanson) was a wealthy British industrialist and corporate raider. They were engaged in 1952 until Hepburn called off the wedding.
Their relationship because their lifestyles and future plans were not aligned.

William Holden
Hepburn had a romantic relationship with Holden while filming Sabrina.
In fact, they had fallen in love with each other. The only trouble was Holden was married. However, that didn’t stop Holden from bringing Hepburn home to meet his wife.
William Holden was married to actress Brenda Marshall (born Ardis Ankerson) from 1941 until their divorce in 1971. They had two sons together, Peter Westfield and Scott. Holden also adopted Brenda’s daughter, Virginia, from a previous marriage.
It’s interesting that Holden’s marriage did not deter Hepburn.
In fact, the only reason I could find for her breaking off the romance with him was that Hepburn learned Holden could not have children. He’d had a vasectomy a number of years earlier.
Holden stayed married to Brenda until they divorced in 1971, after which Holden began a serious relationship with actress Stephanie Powers. They were together for 9 years until his death.
Many have speculated over the years that both Holden and Hepburn were each other’s greatest loves.

IN THE END…
Later in life, Audrey Hepburn’s two sons, Sean and Luca, became the center of her world after she stepped back from Hollywood.
In her final act, she focused more on family and humanitarian work with UNICEF.
She died in 1993 at age 63 from a rare form of cancer, with Robert Wolders by her side.
